Chapter 27

Chevon

“Well, well,” Coach Hodges said after the girls’ team had lined up on the baseline. “What an honor it is to have you two join us.” She was looking at Chevon.

She was noticeably not looking at Zoe, and Chevon realized that she, being the experienced athlete, was going to take the brunt of the blame for skipping yesterday. Coach Hodges must’ve been the only woman in town who didn’t know Chevon’s secret. No, obviously the athletic director didn’t know either, or she wouldn’t be playing. Or maybe they both knew but pretended not to. Chevon was pretty good. Maybe they didn’t want the team to have to play without her.

“You guys missed some conditioning yesterday, so today we’re going to do some extra to make up for it!”

Chevon’s teammates groaned, and one of them swore at her. She was inclined to swear back, but she didn’t have the energy.

“Down and back twice!” Coach blew her whistle, and the team took off. Chevon started but then stopped. She wasn’t even sure why.

Coach glared at her. “You better start running.”

Chevon watched her teammates sprinting down the floor. Suddenly this all seemed so stupid. She loved basketball, but right now she couldn’t stomach it. She looked at her coach. “I’m sorry. I just can’t.” And then she turned and walked toward the locker room.

“Don’t you dare walk off this court!” Coach Hodges shouted.

Tears slid down her cheeks, but she didn’t stop or turn around.

“If you leave here, you don’t get to come back.”

Chevon knew that already, and though the idea made her sad, that sadness wasn’t enough to make her turn around. She just didn’t have the energy. She didn’t have the physical energy, but more importantly she didn’t have the emotional energy.

The locker room felt cold, and she changed quickly. When she had her coat on, she texted Jason, “Where are you?”

The response came immediately. “Weight room.”

Oh great. That place would be packed too. She headed that way, which was awkward because she had to walk through the gym, but the only other option was to walk around the gym outside, and once again, she didn’t have the energy for that. She avoided the eyes of her teammates and her coach and trudged up the stairs to the weight room.

When he saw her, he came right to the doorway. “Why aren’t you dressed?”

His question annoyed her. That was what he was concerned about? “I am dressed.” It was true. She was wearing clothes.

He blinked, confused.

“Got a minute?”

He wiped his sweat off on his sleeve and nodded. She led him out of the weight room and into a corner of the balcony where they wouldn’t be seen by the people on the court below. “I’m having lots of crazy ideas. Thought maybe you could help me sort through them.”

He nodded eagerly. “Of course.”

He was gazing at her so intently, it put butterflies in her stomach. Instinctively, she put her hand on her stomach, and then, worried he might think she was thinking about the baby, she dropped it.
